The Sabian Symbols are 360 recorded archetypical visions channeled through the medium Elsie Wheeler in the 1920s and developed by her mentor Marc Edmund Jones (sabian.org for history). Her visions were documented as short descriptive sentences and correspond to the 360 degrees of the astrological chart. Each degree of the zodiacal circle has its own unique Vision associated with it. The Sabian Symbols can be used to enhance the meaning of each planetary placements within a specific sign because it focuses in on one specific degree offering 30 different meanings within each sign.
For me, the use of Sabian Symbols brings up important questions about psychic communication and mediumship. Elsie Wheeler was a Medium and had tapped into this altered visionary state to experience what would become the Sabian Symbols. Let me offer some explanation as to why these symbols are relevant and useful to our work in astrology and how psychic information travels. As above So Below As Within So Without. Whenever a symbol system is developed such as Tarot, Oracle Cards, Runes, etc., consensus is what gives the system strength. If enough people believe in its potency the accuracy with deepen and grow. I feel this applies to any system, even systems outside of divination including an agreed upon reality about science, economics, etc. The Sabian Symbols work because they were pulled from the collective unconscious, the library of archetypes and symbols as described by Carl Jung, through Wheeler’s psychic mediumship. This system continues to exist in our realm by being pulled into physical reality from the psychic realm each time they are uttered today. They are an agreed upon symbol system and will apply to astrology because we have collectively willed them to apply. Psychic energy is most likely traveling through several different time frames and operating on various platforms through numerology, sacred geometry, and dimensions. When we tap into altered states of consciousness we are better able to access the meanings of symbol systems and gather information through our subconscious/psychic body which communicates through symbols. Our conscious mind can translate these symbols and make connections with other symbols and shapes here in the physical world so we can apply the language of the subconscious to conscious life. I believe we all have the ability to enter altered states and develop mediumship abilities. Practicing Mediums and Psychics have honed these skills to be able to easily travel between the worlds of conscious and subconscious realities making contact with spirits, visions, and ancestors depending on what energy current they are tapped into.
So how to use the Sabian Symbols? I use the Sabian Symbols as a personal development tool and less so for astrology readings at this point in time. If I am looking for another layer of meaning in a placement of a personal planet, rising sign, or the Moon’s Nodes I look to the Sabian Symbol. You can create poetry based on your personal birth chart corresponding symbols. You can use the system as a daily oracle. Using your mediumship skills you could channel your own personal 360 degree Symbol System.
Many websites have reproduced the Sabian Symbols and at times slight alterations have been made to them since their original development. You can link the specific planetary degree to to the corresponding Sabian Symbol using the list below which comes from astrologyweekly.com To get a copy of your natal chart I suggest Astro.com
