Astrologer Donna Cunningham had put forth the argument that the Earth is the natural ruling planet of Taurus. I love this idea and feel very connected to the rootedness of Taurus with the Earth’s vibration. On a personal level, as a Taurus rising, I feel very aligned with the idea of Earth/Gaia as the ruling planet or at least co-ruling with Venus.
Let’s Ask Why?
Because of how we are constantly being programmed in life I think it is very important to ask questions, you can read about why I question my belief in astrology by clicking here! So why would it be useful to add a layer of meaning to the zodiac sign of Taurus with an additional ruling planet?
For me, I feel the Earth is long overdue for a proper place in the astrological schema. My goal is to incorporate a more grounded sense of realism and presence through the symbols in the astrological chart.
We talk about our capacity for growth, change, and transformation frequently using the symbolism of astrology. I want to put these themes into practice for the field of astrology itself by making space for new ideas.
Gaia as the ruling planet seems like a natural evolution to the Taurean archetype. Astrology has a tendency to get very tangled in heady details, intellectual discussion and data. Whereas I think this can be useful and illuminating information to have, I think a more embodied approach to astrology, at times, can bring an added layer of depth and symbolism to one’s real life circumstances.
What About the Rising Sign?
The Rising or Ascendant sign is seen as the physical body, outward appearance, and identity masks we wear at different times during our lives. I think this is fitting and I would not want to take these symbolic meanings away from the Rising Sign. In my opinion the Earth/Gaia planet does represent somewhat similar energy to the Rising Sign but can be viewed through a more spiritual lens as being a physical manifestation of our divine being.
Ultimately I think the Earth has a bigger part to play in astrology but it will take time to see how this information actually fits into charts, if it feels true + accurate, and how it manifests. On a purely symbolic and psychic level I feel the archetypal energy of the Earth is asking to be more fully expressed through our astrological language.
The Earth/Gaia placement in the chart can help represent how we find balance with our Sun sign, you can read more about that by clicking here. As ruling planet of Taurus the Earth has the opportunity to take on a more prominent role. The symbolism associated with Gaia, if studied and incorporated by other astrologers, will have a chance to be tested and developed.
As Taurus is symbolic of sensuality, the beauty of nature, and the material world it seems natural that the Earth would co-rule with Venus as both of these planets together better highlight the experiential Earth aesthetic associated with Taurus. What do you think? Should we disrupt the traditional rulership?
